Charles Edwin Craven, 89, Nevada, died of heart failure on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at Story County Long Term Care in Nevada where he had been a resident since Dec. 1998. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Nov. 23 at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Nevada with Pastor Steve Williams officiating. Burial will be held at the Lawn Hill Cemetery in Stanhope at 1 p.m.

Charles was born on Dec. 18, 1911 in Pilot Mound to Eli A. and Florence (Alsever) Craven. He married Audrey Bennett on Dec. 19, 1942 in Boone. Charles farmed in the Boone area until 1952 and then worked for Hove Truck Lines until his retirement in 1971. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Nevada and enjoyed gardening, and loved the outdoors and his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He had been a resident of Stanhope before moving to Nevada in 1997.

Charles is survived by his wife, Audrey Craven of Nevada; a daughter, Janice Monson and her husband Dean of Nevada; four sons, Melvin Craven and his wife Judy of Nevada, Robert Craven and his wife Mary of Badger, DeWayne Craven and his wife Colleen of Webster City, and Dennis Craven and his wife Bobbi of Iowa City; 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Mildred Ray in 1977 and Geneva Hilsabeck in 1993, and two brothers, Lester in 1910 and one in infancy, and a great grandson, Bennett Green in 1998.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Nov. 23 for one hour prior to the service at the church.

A memorial has been established in Charles name for the Lions Club of Stanhope. Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada is handling arrangements.
