Mary Katherine Wilmer, age of 89, of Aplington, Iowa, was born April 17, 1920, the daughter of Edward and Katherine Vierkamp [Vierkandt/Veerkamp] Wilmer near Webster City in Hamilton County, Iowa. She received her education in a country school near Webster City.

Mary lived near Alden most of her life, then moved to near Ellsworth. She moved to Parkersburg in September, 2004 and became a resident of Maple Manor Village in Aplington in July, 2007.

In her early years, she worked as a housekeeper in Webster City. Later Mary was there for her parents, her sisters and brother-in-law when they needed her to care for them. She was a devout Catholic having been a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williams, Iowa and later of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Parkersburg, Iowa.

Mary enjoyed caring for her chickens and had a large garden of which she canned much of the produce. She was known for her great cooking and baking. When she relaxed, she liked to watch Westerns and the Lawrence Welk Show on television.

Mary died Friday, December 11, 2009, at Maple Manor Village in Aplington, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Edward Wilmer and George Wilmer; one sister, Betty Ostevee [Ostebee]; one niece, Marie Rude; one great-niece, Jennifer Newton and one brother-in-law Orval Ostevee [Ostebee].

Mary is survived by one nephew, John (Sandy) Wilmer, Parkersburg, Iowa; two nieces, Patty (Ted) Lord, Iowa Falls, Iowa and Betty (John) Newton, Mt. Ayr, Iowa; eight great-nephews; two sisters-in-law, Velma Wilmer, Jewell, Iowa and Thelma Wilmer, Iowa Falls, Iowa.

There is no visitation at the funeral home or church. There will be a Rosary at 3:00 p.m., Sunday at the church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, December 14, 2009, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Parkersburg, Iowa with burial in Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Williams, Iowa.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
