DEATH OF A BLAIRSBURG YOUNG MAN

Died at the Hospital at Cherokee - Was Volunteer in Spanish-American War

James Gleason of Blairsburg, died at the Hospital at Cherokee Saturday and was buried this forenoon in the Catholic cemetery between Blairsburg and Williams. He was a victim of consumption and had been in ill health a long time. He was born at Six-Mile-Bridge, County Claire, Ireland, April 2, 1872, and came to this country with his parents thirty-three years ago, since which time he had made his home in Blairsburg township.

When the war between the United States and Spain broke out young Mr. Gleason volunteered and was in camp for a time at Chickamauga. While there he contracted a fever and was never a well man afterward. When he returned to his home in Blairsburg he was given a reception and banquet by his friends as a token of the esteem in which he was held. He was the only volunteer in the Spanish-American war from Blairsburg and the people among whom he had lived from childhood were proud of him. He was deservedly popular with all classes and the town is bowed in sorrow over the misfortune that has pursued him. He had been at Cherokee six years, where he contracted the disease that resulted in his death.

He was a devout Christian, being from childhood an earnest and active member of the Catholic church. And in all the relations of life James Gleason was a good man, a general favorite among his friends.

He leaves two brothers, Michael, who resides on a farm south of Williams, and John, who is in the grain business at Blairsburg, and two sisters, Mrs. John Pyle of Waterloo and Miss Mary Gleason of Blairsburg.
