Henry S. Hovland, son of A.P. and Genevieve Sauer Hovland, was born May 1, 1922 at Story City, Iowa. At the age of 14, he moved with his family to Webster City. He was graduated from Webster City high school in 1941 and attended Webster City Junior college for two years.

He entered the U.S. Navy, attending officers' training school at Columbia University where he was commissioned as an ensign. He served as communications officer on the USS Pope, and spent most of the balance of his career in that capacity.

He was discharged as a Lt. (jg) in 1945, and returned to college, completing his BA degree from the University of Iowa in June, 1947. He was employed by station KVFD, Fort Dodge on the announcing staff, and for the next 11 years he was on the talent and announcing staff at WHO and WHO-TV in Des Moines, working finally as assistant farm director. During this time he married Lucia Thorne in September, 1949. To this union, three children were born, Nick, Nancy and Roxanne.

After leaving Des Moines, he worked for Chapman Associates in New York City. For three years, he managed station WBEC in Pittsfield, Mass. In 1964, he became general manager of station WGCH in Greenwich, Conn., and remained in that position until the time of his death.

He served as a deacon in the Second Congregational church in Greenwich, and served as president of the Connecticut State Broadcasters association in 1921 [guessing this should be 1971]. He was a member of Rotary International, the Masonic Lodge, and a member of the Navy League.

He is survived by his children: Nicholas and Roxanne at Greenwich, and Nancy, in college at Marietta, Ohio; his mother, Mrs. A.P. Hovland, a sister, Mrs. Don (Mary) Struchen, a brother, John W. Hovland; four nephews and two nieces, all of Webster City.
