Daniel E. Phelan, 85, longtime Webster County lawyer, died yesterday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. in Ellen's Nursing Home in Fort Dodge, where he had been a patient for the past ten months.
A grandson of some of the first settlers at Lake Mills, Iowa, Mr. Phelan was born in that community on November 8, 1877. He attended the schools there and the Academy at Nora Springs. He attended the State University of Iowa and was graduated from the College of Law in 1901, following which he engaged in the practice of law in Glasgow, Montana, for three years. He opened a law office in Fort Dodge in 1904 where he continued to practice his profession for more than 60 years.
For the past 25 years he has been associated with his daughter and son-in-law in practicing law under the firm name of Phelan, Karr & Karr.
He was united in marriage with Mary Lucille Madden at Fountain, Minnesota, on June 29th, 1910.
He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Lloyd (Margaret) Karr of Webster City, and two grandchildren, Janet and Richard. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. B. L. Nerby, Sr. of Lake Mills, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his wife, who died in 1941, and one daughter, Mary Kathryn, who died in 1943, by his parents, and three brothers.
Mr. Phelan was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church, attending Corpus Christi Church in Fort Dodge and later, St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Webster City.
Funeral services will be held in St. Thomas Aquinas Church Monday morning at 10 o'clock.
The Rosary will be at the Foster Funeral Home in Webster City at 8 o'clock Sunday evening.
Burial will be made in Calvary Cemetery in Webster City.
