Eugene Isham was born in Dane county, Wis., Sept. 24, 1848, and died at the hospital in this city, April 18, 1931, at the age of 82 years.
His boyhood days were spent in Wisconsin. He was educated in the public schools and the University of Wisconsin, afterwards following the profession of teaching, until his marriage to Alpha Dryden in January 1871. The young couple emigrated to Iowa, making the trip in a prairie schooner. They settled on the open prairie near Duncombe, where they resided for four years and then moved to Custer county, Neb., taking up a homestead. On account of Indian disturbances, the family again moved to Iowa and settled in the same place where they had first resided.
Here they continued to live for 20 years, and then sold the farm and moved to Webster City for one year. Then they purchased a farm seven miles northeast of this city, in Cass township, where they resided for 12 years. Then they moved to this city where Mr. Isham has lived for 24 years. His wife preceded him in death 10 years ago.
To this union were born nine children, three of whom passed away: Harvey in infancy, Cassius at the age of 13, and Ada, who was Mrs. C.J. Carpenter. The living children are: Mrs. Mary Daniels, of Duncombe; Mrs. Paul Hoffman, of Bridger, Mont.; Mrs. Bessie Peterson, of this city, Ray D. Isham, of this city, Mason C. Isham, of Falls City, Neb.; and Robert Isham, of Muskogee, Okla. There also survive 19 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Mr. Isham was the last of a family of eight children.
He was a charter member of the Homer Baptist church and on moving to Webster City he transferred his membership to the Baptist church of this city, where his interest had been manifest through the years and where his decease is sincerely mourned.
