Meade Hughes, 79, longtime Webster City businessman, died Monday evening at St. Mary's hospital in Rochester, Minn., where he had been a patient the past two weeks.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Foster funeral home with the Rev. Don Blanchette officiating and with burial in Graceland cemetery.
Meade Hughes, son of Thomas Marion and Emma Green Hughes, was born April 13, 1884, at Mowcaqua, near Decatur, Ill. He was reared and educated in Illinois, later moving to Missouri and then to Kansas.
In 1894, he moved to Webster City. He was united in marriage Aug. 20, 1901 to Emma Busing, they moved into Webster City where Mr. Hughes engaged in the grocery and meat market business and the couple farmed southeast of Webster City until 1911 when [some of the obituary is missing] for many years, retiring in 1949.
He is also survived by his wife, one son and one daughter, Marion Hughes and Mrs. Jessie Doty, both of Webster City; one brother, Frank Hughes of Fort Collins, Colo.; and two sisters, Mrs. Blanche Waggaman, Belen, N.M., and Mrs. Merle Davis of Tacoma, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters.
Mr. Hughes attended the Congregational church. He was a member of the Elks lodge, also a past president and a charter member of the Kiwanis club. He was at one time the president of the former Webster City Businessmen's association.
