Webster City Freeman, Wednesday, January 12, 1898
Peter DeGroot, who was taken to the asylum at Independence about three months ago, committed suicide at that institution last Friday morning. He found his way to the kitchen and, securing a butcher knife, cut his throat in a most wicked manner, expiring in a few minutes. Peter DeGroot was a farmer who formerly lived about three miles south of Blairsburg and was in good financial circumstances. He leaves a wife and three children. [He is buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Kamrar]
