Paul V. Baldus, 29, Jewell, died Monday, Nov. 7, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, as the result of a farm accident. [Jewell man killed in tractor accident - A Jewell man was killed Monday afternoon when his tractor rolled on top of him. Paul Baldus, 29, was pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines where he was brought by helicopter. According to the Iowa State Patrol, Baldus was traveling one half mile north of county road D-56 on county road R-38 at 4 p.m. when he swerved his tractor into the ditch for an unknown reason. The tractor and two trailers rolled, killing Baldus. He was a lifelong Jewell resident and managed the Country Corner station in Jewell. The accident is still under investigation by the highway patrol and the county sheriff's department.]

Paul V. Baldus, son of Frank and Christina Larson Baldus, was born Nov. 11, 1958 in Story City. He was a 1977 graduate of South Hamilton where he was active in FFA, band, vocal music and football. He was a 1979 graduate of Ellsworth Junior College in Iowa Falls. He was married to the former Cathy Peterson, and was a farmer and manager of Harlan's Country Corner Store in Jewell.

He is survived by his wife Cathy; sons Christian and Benjamin; daughter Sarah; his parents; two brothers, Francis, Shellsburg; and Andrew, Silver Spring, Maryland; three sisters, Elizabeth Homrighausen, Mechanicsville; Ruth Eichenseer, Ankeny; and Clara Marie Baldus, Cedar Rapids.

He was a member of the Good Shepherd Catholic Church.
