Lavon Peterson, 81, of Ellsworth, died Sunday, April 15, 2001 at Mitchellville Care Center in Mitchellville, Iowa from complications of emphysema. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ellsworth with the Rev. Mike Herschberger officiating. Graveside military services will be in Greenwood Cemetery near Ellsworth.

Lavon Peterson was born Feb. 12, 1920 in Ellsworth, the son of Clarence L. and Julia (Lyders) Peterson. He lived in the Ellsworth community for most of his life. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He farmed and was the owner of Peterson Welding in Ellsworth from 1961 to 1973 and then for Skelly Oil for 10 years before retiring in 1982. He married Marjorie Kallem Aug. 18, 1941. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was a member of the Ellsworth Kiwanis, Ellsworth American Legion and Greenwood Cemetery Association.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Nancy Uttermarkt of Altoona and Mary Sydnes of Story City; one sister, Virgie Candor of San Diego, CA.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Soderstrum-Larson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
