Fatal crash near Jewell

Youth dies in one-car accident

Jeff Hanson, 20, of rural Jewell, was killed, apparently sometime early this morning, in a one-car accident on Highway 69 near Little Wall Lake, Sheriff Jerry Farnham's office reported today.

Hanson was apparently northbound on Highway 69 when the car left the highway, went into the ditch, hit a driveway embankment on the west side of the highway, flew through the air and crash-landed on its wheels, nearly doubling up the vehicle.

Hanson was brought to Hamilton County hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

A passenger in the Hanson vehicle, Jim E. Goodmanson, 19, of Story City, was reported seriously injured in the mishap and was taken to the Story City Memorial hospital and then transferred to a Des Moines hospital, Farnham said.

The sheriff's office indicated that the exact time of the accident is not known nor is the cause of the tragedy. The wrecked auto was discovered at about 5:45 a.m. today by a passing motorist who notified Jewell police department officials who, in turn, called the sheriff's department.

Sheriff Farnham, Deputy Sheriff Scott Anderson and Highway Patrol Trooper Dick Wignall of Fort Dodge, assisted in the investigation.

Hanson was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joel Hanson of the rural Jewell area.

The auto was reportedly northbound on Highway 69 and heading toward Jewell, and the accident may have occurred at any time between 2:30 and 5 a.m., Farnham said.

Hanson's death marked the sixth fatality of the year for Hamilton county.

Funeral services for Jeff Hanson will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the Elim Lutheran church at Randall with the Rev. Donald Berg officiating with burial in the Mt. Olive cemetery at Randall. The body will lie in state at the Becker Funeral home until 11 a.m. Monday, when it will go to the church.

Jeff Warren Hanson, son of Joel and Joyce Thorson Hanson, was born Aug. 1, 1955 at Story City.

He was a graduate from South Hamilton high school in 1973 and was a junior at Iowa State University, Ames.

He is survived by his parents and two sisters, Jill and Julie; his grandmothers, Mrs. Myrtle Hanson of rural Jewell and Mrs. Ira Thorson of Story City.

He was a member of the Elim Lutheran church.
