ACCIDENT. - A very serious and fatal accident occurred some five miles north of this city last Tuesday week. Mrs. J. Stebbins, while preparing dinner, had occasion to empty some scalding water out at the back door, striking her two year old child - whom she supposed was playing in the house where, but a minute before, she saw it - on the shoulder, neck, and side of its face. The scald was so deep and so severe that, although Dr. Whitney being sent for and was on the ground in about two hours and a half after the accident, nothing could be done to save the life of the little innocent, which died the next day about ten o’clock. The terribly afflicted family have the sympathy of the whole neighborhood in which they reside (Hamilton Freeman, 5 Aug 1874, 3).
