Local woman dies in collision

Hamilton county recorded its fifth fatality of the year following a grinding two-car collision late yesterday afternoon on Highway 20 about four miles east of Webster City.

Killed in the crash which occurred about 5:45 p.m. was Mrs. Electia V. Hoshaw, 72, a passenger in a car being driven by her husband, Orva.

The second car was driven by Mrs. Freda A. Weldon. Both drivers were from Webster City.

According to the accident report filed by Deputy Roy Olmstead, Jr., the Hoshaw vehicle was traveling west on Highway 20 at the time of the accident.

The two cars collided as the Weldon vehicle pulled onto the highway from a farm driveway. The Weldon auto reportedly pulled directly into the path of the oncoming Hoshaw vehicle, Olmstead said.

The Weldons were reportedly on their way to Iowa Falls and had decided to turn back to Webster City because of the dense fog that was covering the highway at the time.

Orva A. Hoshaw, suffered chest injuries in the mishap and was taken to the Hamilton county hospital by Deputy Olmstead.

Mrs. Weldon received hip and shoulder injuries while her husband, Glen, suffered chest injuries. Mr. and Mrs. Weldon and Mrs. Hoshaw were taken to the local hospital by the Webster City fire department rescue squad.

Mrs. Hoshaw was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. Deputy Olmstead indicated that she had been thrown against the dashboard of the car by the force of the impact. She also suffered severe head injuries when her head hit the windshield.

Both cars were described as total losses. The right side of the Weldon car and the front end of the Hoshaw vehicle were heavily damaged.

Hamilton county's last fatality occurred Oct. 28 when Kenneth Smart was killed in a car-truck collision at the east city limits of Webster City on Highway 20.
