H. B. Hanson was born at Stavanger, Norway, May 20, 1863, and passed away at his home in Randall Oct. 4, 1937, at the age of 74 years and 5 months. Mr. Hanson's health had not been very good the last three years, he having suffered from heart trouble, but it was only the last three months that he had to withdraw from his business and stay at home.

Mr. Hanson was one of the oldest business men of Randall having been in the harness and oil business there for 45 years. He was a good business man and well liked by his customers. He was very considerate in his attitude of others, hardly ever did he speak an unkind word about anybody.

He had more than his share of trials and sorrow. During the last few years most of his family passed away. Under these afflictions he showed a great deal of common sense and ability to face the trials of life. His heart must have been heavily pressed, but he did not show it. Neither did he complain.

Mr. Hanson was one of the oldest members of Elim Lutheran church at Randall, having joined this church over forty years ago. For many years he served faithful as its treasurer. He was a kind husband and father and his quiet and unassuming spirit made his home a pleasant place to visit.

Mr. Hanson came with his parents, Halvard and Mathea Hanson, to America in 1874. He was confirmed in the St. Petri church in Story City by Rev. Jacobson. As a young boy he worked as a farm hand and as clerk in the Pioneer Store in Story City.

On Nov. 12, 1885, he was united in marriage to Mary Egland in Minneapolis, Minn., at which place he worked for a short time as driver of a street car. Mr. Hanson became the father of eight children of whom five have preceded him in death; Wilmer in 1927, Mrs. Mollie Powers in 1932, Melvin, Raymon and Mrs. Edna Thompson in 1936. Mrs. Hanson died Jan. 9, 1937. The children who survive are Mrs. Ray Anderson and Mrs. Erma Paggett of Randall and Mrs. Wm. Anderson of Richmond, Ca. The first ones gave their father a wonderful care during his illness. He also leaves 19 grandchildren and a brother, H. O. Hanson of Swea City.

Funeral services were held from his home at 1:30 and from the Elim Lutheran church at two o'clock, Oct. 8. The service was conducted by his pastor, Rev. G.O. Paulsrud. Two songs were sung by a quartet, Mrs. P.G. Pederson, Mrs. Clarence Larson, J.H. Brekken and S.M. Teigland. Pall bearers were six business men of Randall, Martin Nelson, J.H. Brekken, O.J. Sopeland, S.M. Teigland, P.J. Okland and M.G. Benson.

Interment was made at the Mt. Olive cemetery.
