Stanhope Mailer, Sat. Oct. 25, 1902

William A. East died at his home just north of town on Monday afternoon at one o’clock, after an illness of about three weeks. The deceased was at first attacked with pleurisy, which later ran into pneumonia. He had been in a dangerous condition for ten days previous to his death, and his family feared he might not recover, as his age and weakened health made it difficult for him to combat that dangerous malady.

The deceased was born in Monroe county, Indiana, on May 19, 1837, and has many relatives still residing in that section of the state. He came to Iowa in 1876, settling in Hamilton county, where he resided until his death. A wife and six children – one son and five daughters- survive him. All were at his bedside when death occurred.

The funeral services were held in the Methodist church here on Wednesday afternoon at one o’clock, being conducted by Rev. Thos. Martindale, of Gowrie. The church was crowded with those who had known the deceased for many years. The internment took place at the cemetery, southeast of town.
