Gary Klaver, 70, of Ames, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.
Gary was born Jan. 8, 1940, in Blairsburg, the son of Ben and Kathryn (McDonald) Klaver. He graduated from Blairsburg High School and attended Buena Vista and Simpson College earning a degree in business administration. He had a successful career as a salesman and manager in the metals industry.
On April 8, 1962, he and Jerilynn Michaelson were married at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell. They lived in Colorado, Texas and Oklahoma, returning to Jewell and later moving to Ames.
He was a man of great kindness and integrity who held his family and friends as the treasures of his life. He loved sports and music and was an avid Denver Broncos and Iowa Hawkeyes fan. Watching and playing golf were his favorite pastimes.
He is survived by his wife, Jerilynn; his son, Jay, and wife, Julie, and their children, Hayden, Kylie and Thomas, of Clarion; and his son, Tom, of Hampton. Also surviving are his sister, Gwen (Jerry) Farnham, and niece, Karen (Michael) Constant ,and nephew, Kevin Foell, and one uncle, Jim McDonald and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell. The family will be present at the church one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Montgomery Memorial Library in Jewell and Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell.
