Clarice M. Pearson, age 92, a long time Ellsworth resident, died Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at Becker Funeral Home in Jewell. Burial will follow at Homewood Cemetery in Ellsworth. Visitation is 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at Becker Funeral Home in Jewell.

Clarice May Shelton was born March 27, 1917 near Stratford to Albert and May (Stoner) Shelton. She attended school in Stratford and Webster City, graduating from Webster City High School in 1935; and attended community college in Webster City and Drake University. Clarice taught school in the rural Webster City area. On June 6, 1942 Clarice married Edward Gilmore Pearson in Kirksville, Missouri. While Edward was in the service, they lived in the state of Washington. Following the war, they moved back to Iowa and lived in the Ellsworth area. Clarice resumed her teaching career in the Stanhope and Ellsworth public schools, retiring in 1974. She continued to use her teaching skills by tutoring, helping Hispanic workers learn English as a second language, and working one on one with people earning their GED (Graduate Equivalent Degree).

Clarice is survived by several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by Verne Eslick, a friend who helped her for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward in 1967, sister, Vera Gaster, and brothers, Merle, Albert, Stanley, and Harold.
