Robert "Bob" Nelson, 65, Mt. Vernon, formerly of Webster City, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003 at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Foster Funeral Home with Rev. Dave Vernon officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Fort Dodge. Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Saturday at the funeral home.
Robert Dean Nelson, son of Wilbur and Valene Porter Nelson, was born Nov. 7, 1937 at Eldora. He graduated from Webster City High School in 1956. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Iowa National Guard, 133rd Batallion Co. E. Infantry, where he served on the rifle team. On June 18, 1960, he married Barbara Ann Hagen at Webster City. The couple later divorced. Mr. Nelson was employed as an iron-worker for 22 years until his retirement. He taught welding at Kirkwood College in Cedar Rapids and farmed for several years following his retirement from iron work. He was the past president of the Iron Worker's Local 89 in Cedar Rapids.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Cindy Nelson, Cedar Rapids, daughter and son-in-law, Nichole and John Flynn of Chicago, grandson and his wife, Joey and Kianna Nelson of Cedar Rapids; brothers and sister-in-law, Kenny and Pat Nelson of Duncombe; sisters and brothers-in-law, Pat and Lowell Mechaelsen, Karen and the late Fritz Weir, all of Webster City; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by his parents.
He was a member of the Hamilton County Saddle Club for many years, where he won numerous awards and blue ribbons. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and football games.
