West Des Moines ~ Helen Irene Braland, 87, died at her home in West Des Moines on Monday, September 15, 2008 from pulmonary fibrosis complications.

Helen I. Braland was born on March 7, 1921 to Samuel Jay Evison and Bertha Ethel Bliss at home in rural Redfield, Iowa. She attended Redfield High School and graduated from Drake University with a B.A. in Education. Helen was a career school teacher for over 40 years. She shared her value of education with her two children, supporting their professional educations in Pharmacy and Law. In retirement, Helen enjoyed volunteering for a number of organizations including the Walnut Creek YMCA and West Des Moines United Methodist church. She was recognized by the YMCA for her dedicated volunteer contribution.

Helen was a sports enthusiast with a passion for college and professional basketball. She was also an exemplary citizen with her constant attention to political and international issues.

During her life she was a member of Ellsowrth Trinity Lutheran Church, Story City St. Petri Lutheran Church and West Des Moines United Methodist Vhurch. She served her church community for many years as a Sunday School Teacher.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, four brothers and her husband, Harris T. Braland, a career farmer in Ellsworth, Iowa.

She is survived by a daughter, Susan H. Carani (Rich) of Greensboro, GA; a son, Samuel H. Braland (Annie of Earlham, and two grandchildren, Dana K. Braland and Kate A. Braland.

A private memorial service for her family was held at West Des Moines United Methodist Church Chapel with final interment at Mamrelund Cemetery in rural Randall, Iowa at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the West Des Moines United Methodist Church Youth Programs.
