THOMAS JOHNSON TJERNAGEL

Thomas Johnson Tjernagel, son of Jan and Johanna Johanneson was born Oct. 26, 1875 in Sveen Prestegjeld, Haugesund, Norway and died at the Story City hospital December 29, 1951, at the age of 76 years, 2 months and 3 days.

He was baptized in Norway on Feb. 13, 1876 and confirmed there Sept. 21, 1890. He came to America in the spring of 1896, coming first to Randall, where he worked for nine years.

He lived at McCallsburg for four years. He rented a farm for some time and in 1917 bought the present Tjernagel farm which has since been his home.

He was a member of the Salem Lutheran church near Radcliffe, where the funeral was held Jan. 3.

March 20, 1902 he was united in marriage to Bertha Braland at Story City, pastor T.T. Helmarck reading the ceremony. To this union one child was born.

He is survived by his wife and son Junice, who is at home; also, four grandchildren, Gloria, Beverly, Lyla Ann and Dean, three brothers and a sister, Severine and Bert Tjernagel and the sister, Olina Hougsgjerd, live in Norway. His other brother, John Johnson lives in Webster City.

In August of this year, he suffered a stroke. He improved considerably and was able to sit up part of the time. He was at the hospital in Story City for two brief periods of about a week each. Except when necessary to receive special care at the hospital, he preferred to be at home. The last six days he spent at the hospital, where he died Dec. 29.

He was one of the quiet men of the community, a man of peace, a kindly soul, a good neighbor, a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Those who furnished the music at the funeral were Elmer Narland, Amos Alberts, Mrs. Everett Eike and Thea Tow, as a quartet and Mrs. Everett Eike and Thea Tow, who sang special numbers.

The casketbearers were Irvin Stemberg, Jesse Johnson, Herman Ryan, Henry Rytter, Oscar Braland and Silas Eittreim. Burial was at Mamrelund cemetery.
