Marjorie “Terry” C. Guthrie, 89, Webster City, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2008 at Hamilton Hospital in Webster City. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Asbury United Methodist Church with Rev. Pete Peterson officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Asbury United Methodist Church.

Marjorie Mignon Carpentier, daughter of Otto Theodore and Mignon Johnson Carpentier, was born Oct. 10, 1918 at Evanston, Illinois. She was raised in Winnetka, Illinois and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois in 1936. She attended the University of Illinois where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She received a baccalaureate of arts degree in English literature in 1940. On Oct. 27, 1942, Terry married William “Bill” D. Guthrie at the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration on Wall Street in New York City. She worked at McDonald Douglas Aircraft in Los Angeles, living with her family in the Hollywood Hills during the war. After the war, Terry and Bill lived in Pekin, Illinois where they had a daughter who died in infancy. They moved to Webster City on April 1, 1947. Bill died on May 30, 1970. Terry and her family continued to reside in Webster City.

Mrs. Guthrie is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Mignon and John Hamlin of Portland, Oregon; Catherine and Colin Scales of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Sarah and Dean Eide of Hubbard, Iowa; son, Theodore of Washington, DC.; grandchildren, Andrea Raske, Nathan (Ashley) Raske, Jess Eide, Molly (Matt) Schroeder, Laura Raske, Beth Raske, Max Hamlin and Cecilia Hamlin; step-granddaughter, Gail (Ryan) Burnard; one great-grandchild and three step great-grandchildren; one niece, Carla Carpentier; and one nephew, Nelson Carpentier.

In addition to her husband and infant daughter, Terry was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and their wives.

Terry was a faithful member of Asbury United Methodist Church, serving in Ruth Circle for 49 years and studying in adult Bible class for the past 20 years. Terry also volunteered for Iowa Children’s Home Society, Youth and Shelter Services, Webster City Traffic Commission, Iowa Central Community College Spotlight Committee, Hamilton Hospital Auxiliary, League of Women Voters, American Association of University Women, TTT Society, Meals on Wheels, Webster City Chamber of Commerce, Webster City Community Theatre, All for Fun Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Webster City Women’s Club, various bridge clubs, Republican Party politics, and most recently, Democratic Party politics.

Terry was a city girl who grew to love life in a small Iowa town. She was proud of Webster City and all it had to offer socially and culturally. She participated happily in many aspects of community life, and will be missed for her thoughtful and reasonable point of view. Following the death of her beloved husband, Bill, she continued to reside in Webster City over the protestations of her brothers and their wives, who felt she would be better off in California. She stayed in Webster City because she loved her friends and her activities here. She finished raising her children in Webster City and eventually retired to Crestview Apartments to reflect on a long and happy life of service to her family and community.

Memorials may be given to Youth and Shelter Services, Meals on Wheels, Asbury United Methodist Church and Kendall Young Library.
