John M. Ellis, 88, of Stanhope, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2003 at the Mercy Medical Center at Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Stanhope Parish, with Rev. Suzie Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Lawn Hill Cemetery, south of Stanhope.
Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and prior to the service on Monday at the church. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post # 191.
John Mark Ellis, son of John and Grace Johnson Ellis,was born Aug. 29, 1915 at Conde, S.D. He graduated from Scranton High School in 1933. During W.W. II, he served with the U.S. Army - Railroad Operating Battalion in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. Following his discharge, he returned to Iowa. He was employed
Fane F. Vawter in commercial construction at various locations in Iowa. On May 18, 1946, he married Betty Mae Knorr at Des Moines. The couple resided at Des Moines. In 1963, the family moved to Stanhope, where they purchased a hardware store. Beside the hardware store, he also worked at Nissen’s in Webster City. Betty Ellis died Aug. 25, 1981. On June 11, 1988, he married Doris Staley Hubbard at Bloomfield. The couple resided at Stanhope.
Mr. Ellis is survived by his wife, Doris; daughters and sons-in-law, Diana and Richard Strong of Estherville; Carol Fisher of Webster City; Stacey and Christopher Woodward of Estherville; son, Michael Ellis of Webster City;step-children, Frank and Marilyn Hubbard; Jerry and Mary Hubbard; Kelly and Marene Hubbard, all of Webster City; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by sons-in-law, Walter Robb and Rick D. Fisher; his parents; brother, Paul Ellis; sisters, Margaret Crown and Eugenie Tudor.
His memberships included: Stanhope Parish, Stanhope Development Group, Stanhope Commercial Club, Stanhope Lions Club, American Legion Post # 191 and Webster City Moose Lodge # 735.
