F. Stuart Barkema

F. Stuart Barkema was born on the family farm, three miles north of Jewell, to Hans and Mary (Albers) Barkema. He was a lifelong area resident. Stuart served in the U.S. Navy, returning to Jewell, where he was in the oil business for 40 years. He delivered fuel oil and operated a service station. Stuart was on the fire department for 25 years and served as a department chief. Later, he was a school bus driver. He was a member of the Federated United Church of Christ, the I.O.O.F., the Elks and Moose Lodges and the American Legion. Stuart also enjoyed bowling, golf, trap shooting, and woodworking. On January 31, 1964, he married Shirley Ann Grove at the Federated United Church of Christ. She preceded him in death in 1984.

Stuart is survived by his daughters, Jacqueline Marie Summerfield and her husband, Dan, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Jerilyn Kay Barkema of Sacramento, California; his sons, James Stuart Barkema and his wife, Wanda, of Muscatine, Iowa, and Terry Lynn Barkema and his wife, Sue of Berwick Iowa: his grandchildren: Teresa, Jayson, James, Vicky, Tina, Jennifer, C.J., Ben and Amanda; and great-grandchildren: Melissa, Holly, Jessica, Kaitlyn, Tori and Rachael. He is also survived by his brothers Merle and Don, both of Jewell. Besides his wife, Stuart was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
