Death of Albert Merritt

Mr. Albert Merritt, well known pioneer resident of the community where he had lived almost 70 years, ever since his early boyhood, died at 9 o'clock Sunday morning at the advanced old age of 82 years 11 months and 18 days. He had been in ill health for about a year, death resulting from heart trouble and hardening of the arteries.

Mr. Merritt was the son of John and Frances Merritt. He was born December 27, 1851, in West Virginia, and passed away December 15, 1935. In the year 1866 he came with his parents to Hamilton County, settling on the place known as the Brinton farm. He has lived ever since in the community east and northeast of Jewell.

Mr. Merritt was married to Julia Marion Peterson at Jewell, February 1, 1882. There were 6 children born to this union, 4 girls and 2 boys. Three of the children preceded him in death, Jennie, Julia and Charles and his wife passed away last January. He is survived by three children, Dave Merritt of Story City, Martha Merritt of Jewell, and Mrs. Rose House of Webster City. Five grandchildren also survive him.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at the Federated Church, the pastor, Rev. Mr. Duxbury, officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery. Songs were sung at the service by a quartet composed of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Fenton and Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Fleenor, with Miss LaVeta Foster accompanying.

Those serving as pallbearers were Oliver Wells, W. H. Davis, Peter Rasmussen, Oscar Lenning, Fred Bonner, and Chas. Barkhuff.
