Hector Tjernagel

Hector J. Tjernagel, Jr., 59, Jewell, died Wednesday, April 4, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 7, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell, Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Jewell. The Becker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Hector J. Tjernagel Jr., son of Hector J. and Alvina Johnson Tjernagel, was born Dec 3, 1929, in Radcliffe. He married Doris Ann Swenson on Aug. 22, 1953 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple farmed in the South Hamilton area. Mr. Tjernagel was a verteran of the U.S. Army in the Korean conflict.

He is survived by his wife Doris, Jewell; three sons, Gary Tjernagel, Ellsworth, Larry Tjernagel and Terry Tjernagel, both of Jewell; two daughters, Joy Lyman, Hampton, and Nancy Watson, Ames; 10 grandchildren; his mother, Alvina Tjernagel, Story City; a brother, Lyle Tjernagel, Waukee; four sisters, Darlene Alsage, Story City; Deloris Arneson, Ellsworth, Phyllis Olson, Mesa, Ariz., and Kathlene Christian, Bloominton, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his father and brother Marvin.

Mr. Tjernagel was a member of the Bethesda Lutheran Church of Jewell, the Lions Club, the American Legion and the Farm Bureau.
