Lloyd Wiese

Lloyd "Sparky" Wiese, age 74, of Jewell, died Saturday, April 26, 2003, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell. Burial with military honors will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell. Visitation was held Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Becker Funeral Home in Jewell. A memorial fund has been established for cancer and heart research and gifts may be sent to Marlene Wiese at 101 Reinhart Street in Jewell.

Lloyd F. Wiese was born July 17, 1928 in Livermore, Iowa to Carl and Ora (Collins) Wiese. He served two years in the U.S. Army in Korea. Sparky married Marlene A. Nelson on April 5, 1953 in Alden, Minnesota. They lived in Des Moines, moving to Jewell in 1956. Sparky operated a gas station south of Jewell, worked for John Deere, and then opened Sparky's General Repair in 1965. He then worked for the Hamilton County Road District as a mechanic, retiring in 1990. Sparky was an active member of the Jewell Fire and Rescue Department, serving as fire chief for several years. He enjoyed collecting and restoring antique cars and tractors. Sparky was a member of the American Legion, two car clubs, and the Iowa Paint Horse Club. He enjoyed taking his daughters to horse shows during the summer months. Sparky and Marlene loved wintering in southern Texas and Arizona and spending time with their friends.

Sparky is survived by his wife, Marlene, of Jewell; two daughters, Wendy Wiese of Webster City, and Willa Wiese (and Tad Smith) of Slater, Missouri; three sisters, May (and husband Carroll "Hook" Bordwell) of Osage Beach, Missouri, Bernice McAleese of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Shirley Rydell of Apache Junction, Arizona; a brother, Earl (and wife Elaine) Wiese of Minneapolis, Minnesota; a half-sister, Margaret Cooley of Brainerd, Minnesota; and three sisters-in-law, Harriet Ellegard of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Evelyn Sailor of Alden, Minnesota, and Sharon Nelson of Deerwood, Minnesota. Sparky was preceded in death by his parents; a half-sister Alice Houston; brothers-in-law Vernon Ellegard, Arnold Sailor, Carl McAleese, Bud Rydell, Charles Houston and LeRoy Nelson.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted with Becker Funeral Home in Jewell.
