Omer Westre

Omer Westre, 90, a lifelong Jewell area resident died Monday, July 8 at Bethany Manor in Story City.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 11 at 9:30 a.m. at Bethany Manor and at 11 a.m. at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell.

Becker Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangments.

He was born Sept. 21, 1900 on a farm near Jewell, the son of Osmund and Belle Twedt Westre.

He attended country schools, and was baptized and confirmed in the Clear Lake and Ellsworth Townships Lutheran Church.

On Oct. 5, 1921, he married Bertha Iverson at Webster City. The couple farmed southwest of Jewell and retired to town in 1964.

Beyond his retirement, he did custom bailing and worked for Becker Funeral Home in Jewell.

Survivors include his wife, Bertha, of Bethany Manor; a daughter, LaVonne Grove of Ellsworth; a daughter-in-law, Bethel Westre of Jewell; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Eugene, in 1981; three sisters and one brother.

He was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church of Jewell, and had served as director of the country school.
