Barkema Rites Held Saturday Afternoon

Funeral services for Hans Barkema, lifetime resident of Jewell, were held last Saturday afternoon, 1:30 at the Becker Funeral Home, and at 2:00 p.m. at the Federated Church. the Rev. Mark Wetteland officiated at the service. William Buckels and Mrs. Francis LeMaster sang at the service.

Mr. Barkema died May 15 at 7:30 a.m. at the hospital at Story City following an illness of only three days. He had suffered a heart attack on May 12, which was the cause of his death.

Burial was made in the Evergreen cemetery at Jewell.

The pallbearers were: Hans Koop, Floyd Barkema, Orville Headley, Willis Barkema, Claude Abramson, and George Barkema, all nephews of the deceased.

Hans Barkema was born December 23, 1884, at Jewell, Iowa, the son of Hensman and Henrica Barkema, and died May 15, 1957, at Story City at the age of 72 years, four months and twenty-two days. He attended grade school in the rural school district north of Jewell.

He was married to Mary Christina Albers on February 3, 1909, at Webster City, Iowa. Five children were born to this union, three of whom survive.

The surviving children are: Merle Barkema, Jewell; Stuart Barkema, Jewell; and Donald Barkema of Jewell.

He is also survived by his wife; one brother, Harmon Barkema of Jewell; one sister, Mrs. J. W. Koop of Jewell, and seven grandchildren. They are: Roger and Merle Richard Barkema, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Merle Barkema; Jacqueline, Jerilyn and James Barkema, children of Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Barkema, and Ruth Diane and Victoria Lou Barkema, children of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Barkema.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two children who died in infancy, and three brothers and four sisters.

Mr. Barkema engaged in farming for 67 years on farm three miles north of Jewell until he retired five years ago and moved to Jewell. He also was in the trucking business for many years.

He served as Township Trustee for many years and also Township Assessor for several years. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. and Elk Lodges. He also was a member of the Federated Church in Jewell.

Members of the I.O.O.F. lodge attended the service in body.
