A. W. Knox Died Suddenly Saturday

Asa Willard Knox, son of Robert Francis and Harriet Jane (Everett) Knox, was born on a farm just west of Ellsworth, Iowa, April 5, 1872, and died in Jewell, Iowa Saturday afternoon, March 31, at the age of 78 years, 11 months and 26 days. He was stricken with a heart attack in the lobby of the DeWitt Hotel just after returning from a trip to Webster city and passed away a few minutes later.

Asa grew to manhood on the farm helping his father with farm work. He was a thresherman for many years starting with the old horse power machine. He bought the first steam engine machine in this community, and the last few years he used the modern tractor. He threshed over a period of fifty years. He owned and operated a garage in Jewell for many years and also owned the first automobile in Jewell. All of his life was spent in Jewell and vicinity.

Asa had always enjoyed good health until about three years ago. He retired then and has since made his home at the DeWitt Hotel in Jewell.

Asa was a very kind person and through the past years illness he always maintained his cheerful disposition and ready smile.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Dodie, who died in infancy, his parents and two half sisters. Surviving are one brother, M. B. Knox of Urbana, Ohio, several nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the Becker Funeral Home in Jewell on Tuesday afternoon with Rev. E. D. Forssell of the Federated church conducting the service. The body was laid to rest beside his parents in the family lot in the Jewell cemetery.

Anton A. Peterson, John Barkema, Roy Bonner, Edgar Harman, Lloyd Buckels and Iver Iverson were pallbearers. Music was furnished by Mrs. Iris Fleenor and Mrs. Otto Fenton with Mrs. Roy Nelson at the organ.
