Mrs. John Knox died Sunday Night

After lying helpless and alone for about twenty-four hours, Mrs. John Knox was found at about one o'clock last Friday afternoon in the basement of her home in Jewell, her entire left side being paralyzed. The stroke proved fatal and she passed away at 7:40 o'clock the following Sunday evening. Mrs. Knox, who has been living alone, had gone into the basement about noon Thursday and there she was stricken. Her daughter and the latter's husband, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Glaman, called at her home Friday shortly after noon, and found her in the basement unable to move and barely able to speak. Medical help was summoned and the other children were called home; but though Mrs. Knox retained consciousness until late Saturday night and was able to recognize her children, she weakened gradually and finally passed away.

Mary Ellen Merritt, daughter of John and Frances Merritt, was born in West Virginia September 4, 1863, and died at Jewell, Iowa March 11, 1928, aged 64 years, 8 months, and 7 days. Practically her entire life was lived in this community as she came to Hamilton county with her parents when she was but three years of age, in 1866. That was even before the railroad had come to this community, the family locating on the prairie near where the town of Ellsworth is now located. There and near and in Jewell she lived all the remainder of her life. She was one of the pioneers of Hamilton county, living all of the hardships and privations of pioneer days and contributing a part in the growth and development of the community. Mrs. Knox united with the Congregational church in 1898.

She was married March 31, 1884, to John W. Knox. Five children were born to this union, all of whom survive. They are: Ben Knox of Burt, Iowa; Laura, Mrs. Chas. Oberender of Jewell; Lucy of Jewell; Chas. Knox of near Dows; and Emma, Mrs. Martin Glaman of Jewell. The husband died February 6, 1909. Mrs. Knox is also survived by twelve grandchildren, as well as by numerous other relatives and many good friends in this community.

Funeral services were held at the home at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon officiated by the Rev. Mr. Priestley, pastor of the Federated church. Interment was made in Evergreen cemetery at Jewell. Songs were sung at the service by Mr. and Mrs. Otto Fenton and Mr. and Mrs. F. L. Fleenor. those serving as pallbearers were: W. J. Loder, Fred Glaman, J. E. Glaman, Carl Voss, Carl Bentson, and T. C. O'Connor.
