Wayne Smith, age 94, of Jewell, died Sunday, July 20, 1997, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday July 23, 1997 at Becker Funeral Home in Jewell with Rev. John Heruth officiating. Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell.

Wayne Summer Smith was born April 25, 1903 in Gladbrook, Iowa to Henry and Anne (Berry) Smith. On October 13, 1923, Wayne married Lulu Mae Blair in Webster City, Wayne worked for the Chicago-Northwestern railroad for over 50 years, retiring in 1968. He belonged to the railroad union and was a member of the Federated United Church of Christ in Jewell.

Wayne is survived by his sister -- Darlene Harmon of Comfrey, MN, 6 grandsons, a granddaughter, and a great grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife -- Lulu in 1988, his son -- Charles in 1970, and three brothers -- Frank, Boyd, and Herschel.

Becker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
