Dean Peterson, age 78, of Jewell, died Thursday at the Hubbard Care Center in Hubbard. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 21, 1997, at Bethesda Lutheran church in Jewell with Rev. Tim Nappe officiating. Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell.

Dean LeRoy Peterson, son of Peter M. and Minnie (Bernsmeier) Peterson was born March 27, 1919 at his parents rural home near Jewell. He attended rural schools and Kamrar High School. On January 1, 1943, he was united in marriage to Orpha Hendrickson at Stanhope, Iowa. They lived all 54 years of their marriage in the Jewell area, where they farmed until Dean retired in 1983. Dean continued to work at his hobby of woodworking until the time of his death. He was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church, and had been a member of the Jewell Lions club.

Dean is survived by his wife -- Orpha of Jewell; 3 daughters -- Sandra Peterson of Shoreview, MN, Karen Culpepper of Jewell, and Mary Jo Ytzen and her husband Jim of Des Moines; a son -- Everett Peterson of Newport, VA; 5 granddaughters -- Jodi Culpepper of Overland Park, KS, Julie Culpepper of Cedar Rapids, Amanda, Abigail, and Andrea Ytzen all of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother -- Glenn.
