DEATH OF AGED VETERAN

John McFarland, an old time resident of Hamilton county, passed away at his home, eleven miles south of this city, Monday evening, May 24th, at 11:35 o'clock. He suffered a paralytic stroke Friday, May 14th, while working in his garden and also contracted a bad cold which later developed into pneumonia. On Monday afternoon about 5 o'clock he suffered another stroke, and being in a weakened condition, did not long survive.
John McFarland was born in Champagne county, Ohio, Dec. 17, 1830, and was therefor 84 years, five months and seven days old when the end came. He was married to Martha Ann Duckett on May 25, 1856, who still survives him. Born to this union were seven children - George T. of Sank Center, Minn.; W. F. of Stanhope; Mrs. B. H. Clabaugh, of Boone; Mrs. Robert Fisher of Stanhope, who passed away May 4, 1913; J. H. of Stanhope; Mrs. J. H. Clabaugh of this city; Leney Franklin, who died at the age of four years. He also leaves three brothers and two sisters, thirty-eight grandchildren and thirty-two great grandchildren.
Mr. McFarland came to Hamilton county in 1855. He was a veteran of the civil war. He went into the service in September, 1864, and was discharged June 8, 1865, at Montgomery, Alabama.
The deceased was very industrious and hardworking man, and performed many hard tasks of labor in spite of failing health and his advanced years. Everything that willing hands and loving hearts could do during his illness was done to relieve his sufering. He was patient and uncomplaining to the end, but-

The Angel of death had beckoned,
And his sorrows and trial, are o'er;
He is resting now in quiet and peace
On that beautiful golden shore.

The sorrowing family have the heartfelt sympathy of all who know them in their great bereavement.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 27th, at 2 o'clock at the Saratoga church, with interment in the Saratoga cemetery.
