Retired Army Lt. Col. Chester R. Doty, 60, a civilian supervisor in the Defense Communications Agency, died of a heart attack Tuesday at his home in McLean.

He joined the DCA here as a civilian in 1964 after retiring from the Army Signal Corps as commanding officer of the West Coast communications station at Davis, Calif.

As a supervisor at DCA, Col. Doty was responsible for the Defense Department's major communications system serving the president, secretary of Defense and other top officials.

He was born in Webster City, Iowa. He entered the Army in 1942 and was commissioned a year later, serving in the Pacific during World War II. He also served in Korea during the conflict there.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann, of McLean; eight children, Kathleen, Sharon and Sandra, all of McLean, Chester R. Jr. of Dickerson, Md., Michael of Springfield, Dennis, of San Francisco, Margaret Nadeau of Jacksonville, Fla., and Donna Wolf of Falls Church; two brothers, Clifford, of Webster City, and Vernon, of Des Moines, Iowa, and three grandchildren.

The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Heart Fund.
