Mr. Joseph Johnston was born August 2ea4th, 1837, in Frederick County, Pennsylvania and died March 21, 1926, in South Stuart. He was the son of John and Catherine Johnston, the youngest of fourteen children and the last to survive. Mr. Johnston's folks moved to Meggs County, Ohio, where he was united in marriage to Charlotte Andres September 4, 1858. Three children were born to this union, John Emmett, Ida May, now deceased, and Joseph Elmer.

still in Ohio, Mr. Johnston enlisted in the civil war in 1862 at the age of twenty-four. He served 3 years in Company K, 7th Regiment, Ohio Calvary.

Mr. Johnston and family moved from Ohio to Missouri in 1883, and in 1893 to Stuart, and resided here util his death.

He was a well known and respected citizen of this community, working at the carpenter trade until his last years. He joined the Christian Church in his early days at Danville, Ohio, and transferred to the Christian Church at Stuart. He attended church regularly until the last few years when he became helpless.

He leave to mourn his death, his wife, Charlotte Johnston, two sons, Emmettt and Elmer Johnston, sixteen grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren and numerous other relative and friends.

The funeral services were held at the Christian Church, conducted by Rev. Williamson of Guthrie Center. Six grandsons acted as pallbearers ad the Civil war veterans acted as honorary pallbearers.

JOSEPH JOHNSTON DIED AT HIS HOME IN STUART, IOWA

The Echo last week overlooked the report of the death of Mr. Joseph Johnston, father of J.E. Johnston, which occurred at his home in Stuart March 21st. Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ in Stuart on Tuesday the 23rd.

The deceased was a Civil War veteran and would have been 89 years old in August. He is survived by his wife and two sons, Elmer of Earlham and Emmet of Stuart who have the sympathy of their communities in this painful bereavement.
