William Mathias Schwaratz, one of Bayard's oldest residents, died Wednesday, June 15 at the Guthrie County Hospital following an illness complicated by a broken hip.
An area farmer for many years, Mr. Schwartz had lived on South Main Street prior to his death.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Bayard United Methodist Church with Pastors A Keith Hauser and Steven Wainwright officiating. Miss Lula Garnes was organist and Mrs. Patricia Schwartz sang two hymns.
The casket was carried by Lowell Reever, Bob McCool, Leonard Siedhoff, Lester Garnes, and Ray and Howard Schwartz. Interment was made in the Highland Cemetery.
Born in Sterling, Illinois, November 11, 1888, he was the son of Mathias and Barbara Esslinger Schwartz. At the age of ten, he moved with his parents and family to the Schwartz farm south of Bayard. Here he grew to manhood and continued the rest of his life in the farming industry.
On November 30, 1927, Mr. Schwartz was married to Mrs. Eva L. Smith. She preceded him in death on January 30, 1944. He married Hazel F. Garnes September 27, 1948, and they made their home in Bayard until his last sickness.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel, several nieces and nephews and many friends who will miss him greatly.
Besides his first wife, Mr. Schwartz was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Cassie Garnes and Sadie Griffin, and a brother, Raymond Schwartz.
