Samuel King

Samuel King was born March 17, 1834, in Monaghan, Ireland, and was privileged to live 76 years, 10 months and 11 days.

On the 29th day of January, 1856, he was united in marriage to Susan Sharp, and in 1857 came to this country and lived for two years in the state of New York. From there he moved to Illinois where he remained thirteen years. In 1872 he removed to Grundy county, Iowa, which has since been his home. There are three children to await the reunion--J. S. King of Grundy Center, Alexander King of Harris, Iowa, and Maria still at home.

On last sabbath morning he went to church as usual and during the Sunday school was taken sick and went home. On Monday he was dressed and walked out to the barn. Pneumonia and heart trouble kept him to his bed after this, and on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 4 p.m., Brother King went to meet the wife who had gone seven years before him.

Brother King was a farmer, and while he has spent his last years in town, he has been a worker and as much of a farmer as one can be and live in town. He was a man that every one knew and liked. The children delighted to have him with them on picnic days as one of their number. Always accommodating, always pleasant, it was a delight to meet him. His home was where the minister stayed in his coming and going. His birthday came on St. Patrick's day and his friends always remembered it for him. A large easy chair in his home is one of these remembrances. He always wore the shamrock on his birthday although he was an Orangeman. His banter and joke were with him to the last. Brother King was one of the few men that are always at church. He had never been sick but once, with an attack of grippe several years ago, and sunshine and rain found him in his place at church.

The services were from the Presbyterian church. The pastor Rev. A. W. McNeel was assisted by Rev. H. B. Dye of Grundy Center. Rev. James Herron of Amity was also present. The text was "Thou shall be missed, because thy seat will be empty," I Sam., 20:18.

Some of those present from out of town were Alex King and wife of Harris, Iowa, J. S. King, Wm. Lynch, Jeff Morrison and Rev. H. B. Dye of Grundy Center, E. K. Greene, Robt. Gardiner and Adam Miller of Reinbeck. Many friends from Amity and also the community where he once lived were in attendance.

The flowers were many and beautiful.

The interment was in the family lot in the Morrison cemetery.

The family have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement.

Card of Thanks
We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to the friends and neighbors who so kindly assisted us in the sickness and death of our beloved father, also for the beautiful floral offerings.
