Father Of Twelve Children Dies

Carl John Schick, who was the father of twelve children, all of whom are living, died at his home in Morrison at three o'clock Friday afternoon. Death was the result of a brain tumor with which he was afflicted during the past year. The large family lived on a farm a mile northwest of Morrison until December 1946, when they moved to Traer. Eight months ago they returned to the town of Morrison.

Funeral services were held at St. John's Lutheran church in Reinbeck at 2:30 Monday afternoon. Rev. Richard Schliepsiek was the officiating pastor. Burial was in the Morrison cemetery.

Carl John Schick was born Dec. 4, 1903, at Dixon, Ill., the son of John Schick and his wife Susie (Schumacher) Schick.

At the age of four years his parents moved to Bayard, Iowa, where Carl attended school. At the age of 15 years he was confirmed in Trinity Lutheran church, Coon Rapids, Iowa. Oct 13, 1930, he was united in marriage to Erna Amanda Fischer, after which they made their home near Bayard, Ia. To this union were born twelve children: John Henry, Richard Carl, Darlene Susanne, Pearl Jane, Earl James, Robert Eugene, Carl Junior, Henry Albert, Joan Lucille, Jean Louise, Lavonne Marie and Lois Elaine. All of the children with the mother survive.

In 1943 the family moved to the Grundy Center vicinity, where they farmed until December 1946. At that time the family moved to Tama county, northeast of Traer, where Carl was stricken with an affliction which later was diagnosed as a brain tumor. He was treated at the state hospital at Iowa City, culminating in a very serious brain operation in the fall of 1947. He returned from the hospital after the operation somewhat relieved, but only for a brief period, when again he became stricken. In the meantime the family had moved to Morrison, where Carl spent the last eight months of his life, practically bedfast.

Besides his wife and children, he leaves to mourn his death, his parents, four sisters and one brother: Mrs. Lizzie Schwartz, Mrs. Anna Lucht, Henry Schick, Mrs. Christina Anderson and Mrs. Clara Fousek.
