James Mooty Died Wednesday; Was Sick Past Year

James Mooty, one of our rugged and highly esteemed Grundy county pioneers, died at his home in Grundy Center Wednesday evening. Had he lived until next April he would have been 80 years old. His health failed gradually the past year following serious injuries he received when he fell down stairs at his home.

A short prayer service was held at the home Friday afternoon at 1:30 and later at the First Presbyterian church in Grundy Center with the pastor, Rev. Oliver Stevenson, in charge.

Edward Bos sang, "A Silent Voice" and "Sunset and Evening Star." He was accompanied by Miss Emma Kliebenstein at the piano. Nephews of Mr. Mooty served as pallbearers. Burial was in the Morrison cemetery.

Obituary
James Mooty, son of William and Sarah Mooty, was born in Longford county, Ireland, April 16, 1859. At the age of 13, he came with his parents to Brooklyn, N.Y. His father died soon after coming here and his mother and her young sons faced the hardships of pioneer life. He lived for a short time at Transfer, Pa., and in Fillmore county, Minnesota. In 1881 he came to Grundy county.

On March 15, 1887, he was married to Margaret Miller. His wife and four sons, John of Worthington, Minn.; Charles, Wesley and Edison of Grundy Center, and twelve grandchildren survive.

Also surviving are two brothers, William and Samuel of Grundy Center, a half-sister, Mrs. Cora Roberts of Minnesota; three half-brothers, Phineas and Peter Dewey of Stickney, South Dakota, and Walter Dewey of Kansas City, Mo. Three brothers preceded him in death, John, Thomas and Wilson.

Since coming to Grundy county, Mr. Mooty has been a very successful farmer. Fifteen years ago Mr. and Mrs. Mooty moved to their present home in Grundy Center. Two years ago they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. He was a member of the Presbyterian church.

Mr. Mooty was a man universally loved and respected by every one and his death has brought sorrow to many homes in the community.

Today the journey is ended
And I have worked out the mandates of fate
Naked, alone, undefended
I knock at the Uttermost gate
Lo, the gate swings wide at my knocking
Across endless reaches I see
Lost friends, with laughter, come flocking
To give a glad welcome to me.

Those from a distance attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Walter Dewey, Kansas City, Mo.; Lester Cathcart and two sons, Centerville; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Megan, Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Megan, Mapleton, Minn.; Mat Meller and Mrs. Naumann, Waterloo; Merle Tanner, Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Doherty and son Marwin, Cedar Rapids.

Card of Thanks
The kindness and sympathy of neighbors and friends in our recent sorrow will always remain with us a precious memory. Our sincere thanks and gratitude for all those comforting acts.
Mrs. James Mooty and Children
