Funeral Services For Aged Union Woman Held Tuesday

Union, Nov. 12--The funeral services for Miss Matilda E. Benson were held at her home near Union Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Paul W. Stephens of the Federated church, in charge. A quartet composed of F. D. Herron, E. J. Hauser and Mesdames O. E. Wood and David Hauser sang two selections. Mesdames H. E. Humphreys and J. R. Alexander were in charge of the flowers. The following were pallbearers: Omer Mitchell, S. R. Spurlin, D. Hauser, O. E. Wood, George Hauser and W. J. Tiffany.

Miss Benson was born in Ashtabula county, Ohio, on Aug. 1, 1835. In 1838 she came with her parents to Iowa, which was still a territory, and in 1864 the family located in Hardin county, which has ever since been her home. In the pioneer days of Iowa she was a teacher in the public schools of this county. She is survived by three brothers, Solon F., of Pearson; Sidney R., of Chilhowee, Mo., and Horace J., of Lincoln, Neb., who were present at the services. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Sylvia I. Lindley, of Bloomington, Ill., and Mrs. A. E. Swain, of Union. Mrs. Herbert Benson, of Pearson, accompanied Solon F. Benson here for the funeral services. Burial was made in the Benson cemetery, southeast of Whitten.

Miss Matilda E. Benson, daughter of John and Almeda Benson, deceased, passed away at the Benson homestead just east of Union, Sunday morning, at the age of 89 years, following a stroke of apoplexy suffered Saturday morning. Miss Benson came to Hardin county with her parents in 1866, being one of the oldest settlers of the county. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock at the A. C. Swain home, the Benson homestead.
