Marcella L. Neessen Laid to Eternal Rest

Marcella Laverne Neessen, age 99, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2021, at her home in Creekside Assisted Living, Grundy Center, Iowa, where she has resided. Marcella was 2 days short of her 100th birthday.

Marcella was the only child of loving parents, Claas Christoph and Marie nee Knock and was born on her parent’s farm, 1/4 mile north of Wellsburg, Shiloh Twp., Grundy County, Iowa, on September 10, 1921. She was baptized on September 21, 1921, by the Rev. William Landsiedel, in the Reformed faith. Marcella was a baptized and confirmed member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church.

In 1939 Marcella graduated from the Wellsburg High School, in Wellsburg, Iowa, and took part in Girls Glee Club all four years, and a member of the school play. After graduation she helped her parents on the farm, and moved with them to their new home on 4th Street, in Wellsburg, upon completion, in 1948. Marcella cared for her parents, especially her mother when her health began to fail.

She served as organist at the Wellsburg Reformed Church more than half of a century. She was also the Wellsburg correspondent for the Wellsburg Herald, and later when it became part of the Grundy Register for many years.

After her mother passed away on June 10, 1959, Marcella and her father traveled and saw the United States. They traveled to most of the North West and South Western states, including Mexico. A trip was also taken to Florida, and Washington D. C. with her aunt and uncle, the Rev. John and Kathryn Neessen Masselink of Michigan.

In later years, after her father passed away, on October 2, 1971, she toured the Holy Lands, and Ostfriesland, Germany, where she was able to visit Holtland, Ostfriesland, which was the birthplace of her paternal grandfather, Christoph (Christopher) Wolbrecht Gerhard Neessen.

Marcella loved to read, and when she was able, tended her flower garden and enjoyed the company at her home and at Arlington Place, and later Creekside.

Marcella was preceded in death by her parents, Claas C. and Marie nee Knock Neessen; uncles and aunts Eilert, and Jacob W. Knock who died as a young men, Hilke, who also died as an infant, Elisabeth “Lizzie”, Mrs. Gus Fritzel, Heiko Albertus (aka Heiko C.) Alberdena C. Neessen, and Kathryn, Mrs. Rev. Dr. John Masselink. Also, all her cousins, Wilbur Knock, Annette, Mrs. Harold O’Kones, Irene, Mrs. Elmer Ruter, Elmer Fritzel and Esther, Mrs. Harold Geerdes, Evelyn B. Neessen, Christopher Neessen Masselink, and Ethel, Mrs. Leland Cannon.

She is survived by a host of friends that cared for her dearly.

Marcella Laverne Neessen, 99, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at Creekside in Grundy Center, IA.

A visitation will be held from 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at Wellsburg Reformed Church. Funeral services will begin at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Verlyn Boone officiating. Interment will follow at Wellsburg Reformed Church Cemetery.

Marcella was the only child of loving parents, Claas and Marie (Knock) Neessen. She was born on her parent’s farm north of Wellsburg on September 10, 1921. She was baptized on September 21, 1921 in the Reformed faith. She was a lifetime member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church.

In 1939, Marcella graduated from the Wellsburg High School. After graduation, she helped her parents on the farm until they moved to their new home in Wellsburg. Marcella cared for her parents, especially her mother when her health began to fail.

Her mother passed away in 1959 and her father in 1971. Marcella and her father traveled the United States and Mexico. Marcella also toured the Holy Lands and Ostfriesland, Germany.

Marcella served as secretary and organist for the Wellsburg Reformed Church for many years, and was a correspondent for the Wellsburg Herald, a section of the Grundy Register. She loved to read, play cards, and enjoyed visiting with her friends.

Preceding Marcella in death were her parents, uncles, aunts, and cousins.

She is survived by a host of friends.
