Oliver M. Pleasants
Former Resident Here, Died In Los Angeles, Calif.
Wife, Son and Daughter Survive--A Former Ackley Clothing Store Operator
Oliver M. Pleasants, a former resident business man of Ackley, died at his home in the city of Los Angeles, California, April 27th. Funeral services were held in that city on the 30th, and his remains were interred there. This is the substance of a letter that was received Tuesday by Mrs. W. H. Goettel.
Oliver Pleasants is well remembered by people of Ackley, many of them. He came to this city from Spencer, Iowa, where he had been engaged in the same line of business. Henry Pappe of the Pappe Clothing concern, conducted a clothing store in the then Higgins building, located at the present location of the Ackley State Bank. Mr. Pleasants succeeded the Pappe's. Wide-awake and alert, he was a good business man; his business prospered. Later he occupied a building on the north side of the street, then the Weber building. He continued on several years, closing out to return to his former home at Vevay, Indiana. Subsequently removing to Texas, later to California.
He was united in marriage to Miss Hulda, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Martin; they were among Ackley's earliest residents. Mrs. Pleasants, with one son and one daughter, survive and live in Los Angeles. Mrs. Pleasants is a sister of the late Mrs. Gus Maune, (Anna Martin), of William and Reuben and Wilma.
Born and reared at Vevay, Indiana; there doubtless are surviving members of his family there. A younger brother visited in Ackley at one time. Mr. Pleasants was along in the seventies. It is related that two years ago he sustained a stroke of paralysis and since that time, up to the day of his death, he was obliged to remain in bed.
Friends of the family, in Ackley, will be grieved to know of his death; expressing sympathy to Mrs. Pleasants and other surviving members of the family.
