A. J. Kruse Dies Of Cancer After A Short Illness

Was Widely Known Over The County; Came To Grundy County 57 Years Ago

A. J. Kruse died at his home in Wellsburg last Saturday evening following an illness from cancer that covered a period of about three months. Shortly after his health began to fail noticeably he was taken to the hospital at Marshalltown. Hospital surgeons regarded an operation hopeless. He remained at the hospital about a month, after which he was brought home.

Mr. Kruse was widely known over the county and the news of his death was received with deep regret. During the many years that he resided in Grundy county he gained the respect and confidence of his neighbors and others with whom he came in contact. He was little past the prime of life and had always enjoyed good health until he became afflicted with the malady for which modern science has found no cure.

Was a Native of Illinois
Mr. Kruse was born at Freeport, Ill. He was 66 years old on the 3rd of this month. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Kruse. When nine years of age he came with his family to Grundy county. The family acquired a home on a Colfax township farm where A. J. went to school and grew to manhood. He was married on June 20, 1894. He and his bride began housekeeping on a farm in Lincoln township. They resided in Beaver township a year. Three years after their marriage they acquired a farm of their own in Colfax township where they resided continually until eleven years ago, when they moved to their modern and comfortable home in Wellsburg. Here they were near their children and among loyal friends and they were entirely happy in their retirement.

Mr. Kruse and others of his family became members of the Colfax Presbyterian church and they were constant attendants at the services there.

Many Bereaved Friends at Funeral Services
Funeral services were held at the Colfax Presbyterian church Wednesday afternoon. There was a very large attendance of bereaved friends and associates of Mr. Kruse during the many years' affiliation with this church. Rev. George Swalve had charge of the services. He was assisted by Rev. J. E. Drake, who for more than thirty years had been the deceased's pastor, and by Rev. Wm. Landsiedel, pastor of the Reformed church at Wellsburg, and a personal friend of many years. Pallbearers were his grandson, Joe Knock, and his five sons-in-law, Eilert Knock, John Heerts, Marcus Meyer, Ralph Heerts and Asa Slifer.

Surviving are the wife and five daughters. The daughters are Mrs. Eilert Knock, Mrs. John Heerts, Mrs. Marcus Meyer, Mrs. Ralph Heerts and Mrs. Asa Slifer. Mr. and Mrs. Kruse had three sons, two of whom died in infancy. The other lived to be two years old. There are fourteen grandchildren. Other near relatives are three brothers and three sisters. The brothers are Harm, Conrad and John. The sisters are Mrs. John Abels, Mrs. Dick Harberts and Mrs. George Graves. All of the children, the brothers, and the sisters reside in Grundy county.
