Dale Weldon Nelson, 95, died Saturday September 20, 2014 at Urbandale Care Center. Funeral services will be 10:30 am Friday, September 26, 2014 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church.

Dale was born June 3, 1919 in Boone County, Iowa to Pete and Laura Nelson. At an early age the family moved to Wilder, Idaho where he attended the first five years of school. In 1930 the family moved to a farm near Dayton, Iowa. Dale graduated from high school in 1937. He attended the University of Iowa, graduating in 1941. Dale taught high school and coached basketball at Palo, Iowa for one year before leaving for the army in August 1942. He was stationed in Panama for a year, then came back to the US. Dale was discharged in February, 1946.

Dale was united in marriage to Evelyn Lucille Underwood of Arlington, Virginia at the Alexander Baptist Church on August 31, 1946. Dale and Evelyn were married for 60 wonderful years. They enjoyed wintering in Lake Havasu, Arizona for 18 years. The sunny weather, water sports, golfing and mountain scenery were favorites in Lake Havasu.

Dale taught and coached in Wellsburg, Iowa for two years. In 1948 he was employed by the Iowa Farm Bureau. He worked for Farm Bureau for 36 years, including 2 1/2 years in Minnesota as Executive Director of Minnesota Farm Bureau. The rest of the time he worked in Iowa. He was Executive Director of Iowa Farm Bureau and Secretary/Treasurer of Farm Bureau Insurance Companies for 8 1/2 years. During his career he served on several Boards including: The Iowa Children and Families of Iowa, Better Business Bureau and Blood Bank of Des Moines.

Dale enjoyed spending time with his two boys, Roger and Wade, while they were growing up and grandchildren, Corwin, Erin and Meghan, in later years. Dale enjoyed following the Chicago Cubs, the Kansas City Royals, golfing and for years had season tickets to the Iowa Hawkeye football games. Dale has been a life long member of the United Methodist Church and a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church since 1961. Until recent years he was very active on many committees and served on several boards at Aldersgate.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, son, Dale Roger Nelson, sister and brother-in-law, Doreen and Edmund Gerhard.

Survivors include; one brother, Robert Nelson (Joyce) of Pinetop, AZ.; one son, Wade Allyn Nelson (Joan) of Kansas City, MO; daughter-in-law, Ann Nelson, of Kennewick, WA; three grandchildren: Corwin Weldon Nelson (Kelly Moore) of Seattle, WA, Erin Elizabeth Nelson (Joe Koster) of Iowa City, IA and Meghan Sarah Nelson (Tessa Burchardt) of Seattle, WA; two great-grand boys: Miles Zachary Miller and Edmund Nelson Svoboda both of Iowa City, IA; as well as several nieces and nephews and many cousins and friends.

Visitation at Iles Westover Funeral Home from 5-7:00 pm Thursday, September 25, 2014. Memorials in Dale's Honor may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
