Joseph N. Stone, 85, of 5407 First Ave. SW, died of cancer Tuesday, July 15, 1997, in St. Luke's Hospital. Services: 10 a.m. Friday, St. Mark's Methodist Church. Burial will be private. Friends may call from 5 to 7 tonight at Turner Chapel West. The Rev. Kenneth Bell will officiate.

Survivors include his wife, Gail, whom he married on June 1, 1938; and two daughters, Janet Coffey of Newton and Marilyn Feaker of Cedar Rapids. Also his son-in-law, Bob Coffey of Newton.

Other survivors are four grandchildren, Sonya Schneekloth of Cedar Rapids, Gary J. Feaker of Urbandale, Nathan Coffey of Newton and Lindsay Coffey of Newton. He also had three great-great-grandchildren, Skyler Schneekloth and Riley Schneekloth, both of Cedar Rapids, and Callie Feaker of Urbandale.

Joseph was born June 19, 1912, in Luton, Iowa, near Sioux City. At age four, he moved to a small farm two miles west of Vail, Iowa. He attended the Vail Public School, where he graduated with a class of 12 in 1930.

In the summer of 1930, he attended Iowa State Teachers College, where he received a license to teach in a rural school. He taught for five years in rural schools near Vail.

He then returned to Iowa State Teachers College, where he received a B.A. degree. Later he received a M.A. degree from the University of Iowa and graduate studies at University of Iowa and Iowa State University.

From 1941 to 1945, he served as high school principal at Ackley. Then for 30 years, he was superintendent of schools at Wellsburg, Bayard and Strafford and county superintendent of Benton and Tama counties until he retired in 1975.

He moved to Cedar Rapids in 1975 and had been a member of St. Mark's Methodist Church. He volunteered at St. Luke's Hospital for many years. He loved to walk and ride his bike. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

A memorial fund has been established by the family for St. Mark's Methodist Church.
