Beloved Pastor Dies of Pneumonia
Rev. Julius Calvin Niebruegge, better known in this locality as "Elmer" Niebruegge, died at his home at Lennox, South Dakota, on Tuesday evening, January 11th, at ten o'clock. Flu pneumonia was the cause of his death. He was sick only about a week. His condition did not become serious until Saturday. Relatives here received a message Tuesday evening telling them for the first time of the young pastor's serious illness. Mrs. Niebruegge's father, H. Lindaman, and her brother, Ben W. Lindaman, left on the early morning train for Lennox on Wednesday. The sick man had passed away before they reached him.
Funeral services were held at Lennox on Friday in the church where Rev. Niebruegge had officiated as pastor during the past six years. Many brother ministers from Iowa and South Dakota together with the hundreds of bereaved friends attended the last sad rites. The services were under the direction of Rev. F. Reeverts, pastor of the Reformed church at Lennox. Interment was made in the cemetery at Lennox.
Rev. Niebruegge was 33 years, 6 months and 15 days old at the time of his death. He was born in Franklin county, Mo., and spent his early years there. He entered the Presbyterian seminary at Dubuque when he was eighteen years of age and was formally ordained as a minister in 1917. His first charge was known as the State Line Church a short distance north of Rock Rapids. He remained here for three years, when he accepted a call to become pastor of the Presbyterian church at Lennox. Under his leadership the church at Lennox grew continually in membership and influence until it had reached a Sunday school membership of 370. He was beloved by the members of his large flock and highly respected and appreciated by the people in the town of Lennox and vicinity.
In September, 1917, Rev. Niebruegge and Miss Reka Lindaman, of Wellsburg, were married here. They left shortly after for the young pastor's first charge in Lyon county. The marriage was blessed with four children, three boys and one girl. The youngest of the children is but a year old.
During his college career Rev. Niebruegge spent much of his vacation time with his friends here and it was during this time that he impressed himself of those who learned to know him here as an upright and capable young man.
Aside from the wife and children the young pastor is survived by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Niebruegge of Franklin county, Mo., three brothers and two sisters. The brothers are Rev. Robert Niebruegge, of Willow Lakes, S.D.; Rev. Amos Niebruegge of Alton, Ill.; Calvin, of Mankato, Minn. The sisters are Mrs. Geo. Bossman and Mrs. Theo. Hudelbrink, of Lennox.
Those from here who attended the funeral were Mr. H. Lindaman, Ben W. Lindaman, John Lindaman, W. H. Lindaman, H. W. Lindaman, Fred Peters, Mrs. Dick Riekens, Mrs. John Groenewald and Mrs. George Hayunga.
