Last Rites Given Mrs. L. Berends

Was Well Known Here Having Lived At Holland And Steamboat For Many Years

Funeral Held Friday

The Remains Were Laid To Rest In The Cemetery At The Colfax Presbyterian Church

The funeral of Mrs. Loert Berends was held last Friday afternoon from the home of her sister, Mrs. John Harms, at Steamboat Rock, and from the Colfax Presbyterian church, near Holland. The services being in charge of the Rev. Mr. Swalve, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Zissler of Steamboat Rock, who spoke in German and by Dr. J. E. Drake who spoke in English.

For many years prior to the death of her husband in 1930, Mrs. Berends was a resident of Holland, but since that time she has been making her home with her children and her sister in Steamboat Rock where she was when death came.

Casket bearers were Wm. Berends, Oddie Olthoff, Otto Paterni, Wm. Harms, Ben Harms and Enno Harms. Interment was made at the Colfax Presbyterian cemetery.

Those who attended the funeral from a distance were: Herman Groenwald and son Hiram, of Norcross, Minnesota, Wm. Gronewald, Wendall, Minnesota; Mrs. Percy Lindsay, Elbow Lake, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. Gratus Nederhoff, Annie Neihaus, Mr. and Mrs. Al Miller, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Kruse and family, John Neihaus and family of Grundy Center; Mr. and Mrs. Peter Borchers, of Ackley; Mr. and Mrs. Ben Lampers of Clarion; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Berends and son Lawrence and Elzo Berends, of Cedar Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Harms and family of Cleves; Mr. and Mrs. Louie Schweertman and family of Popejoy; Mr. and Mrs. Gus Sanders and family of West Bend; Anno TerHerk and family, of Belmond; Mr. and Mrs. John Harms, of Ames; and Mr. and Mrs. Harm Harms of Alexander; Herman Groenwald of Tintah, Minnesota, and Wm. Sanders and family, of Cleves.

Mrs. Loert Berends, nee Sanders, was born August 1, 1859 in Bun, Ostfriesland. She came to America with her family in the year 1893 and lived on a farm in Hardin county. Later they moved to Holland, Iowa. Her husband died eight years ago, October 4, 1930. And also a son, Dietrich, preceded her in death, in the year 1914. Mrs. Berends, who was a faithful member of the Colfax Presbyterian church, died after a brief illness last Tuesday, December 20, 1938 at the home of her sister Mrs. John Harms at Steamboat Rock, Iowa. She is survived by her son William of Steamboat Rock, by two daughters, Mrs. Oddie Olthoff of Wellsburg, and Mrs. Otto Paterni of Aplington, nine grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. John Harms of Steamboat Rock and Mrs. Lena Gronewald, of Los Angeles, California, and two brothers, William Sanders of Steamboat Rock and Gus Sanders of West Bend.
