Mother And Her Daughter Pass
A dark shadow of sadness fell upon the little town of Steamboat Rock last week when mother and daughter were claimed by the angel of death in two days. Both had come down with the flu, followed by pneumonia, almost at the same time. They received medical treatment as well as the best of care but the disease was of a malignant form and soon weakened the heart in each case.
Flora had been staying with her sister, Mrs. Albert M. Ross, at Allison, Iowa, nearly all winter until about two weeks ago when she came home, accompanied by her sister, who visited with her parents for about a week.
Mrs. Ross had left and intended to visit with relatives at Cleves when on the next day she came down with the flu. The whole family of Henry Flessner, where Mrs. Flessner visited, also came down in one day.
Flora had already been feeling bad but thought it due to enlarged tonsils which she planned to have removed in a short time. However, her condition rapidly grew worse and soon caused anxiety.
On Sunday, March 21, her recovery appeared doubtful. She passed away to the great beyond about three hours after midnight, in the firm faith of everlasting life thru Jesus Christ her Savior.
Interment was made in the burial ground at Eastfriesland church about three miles northeast of Cleves. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. A. C. Kruse.
Mrs. Anna Flessner, nee Buhr, beloved wife of Thos. A. Flessner, was born on the 16th day of March, 1856, at Ludwigsdorf, Germany and died March 24, 1920, aged 64 years and 8 days. She was united in holy wedlock on the 5th of May, 1877, to the husband who survives her with six children.
In the year 1881 the couple migrated to America. They then had two small children, the younger but a year old dying soon after their arrival at Ackley. The little family soon moved onto a farm near Cleves but later to another place towards Steamboat Rock.
Two years ago the family retired to this little town of Steamboat Rock, and lived here in comfort, enjoying their modest home greatly. Nine children blessed this happy home, whose names according to their age follow: Helen, wife of A. H. Eckhoff, John of Wellsburg, Henry, near Cleves, Jennie, wife of Al. W. Ross, Allison, Iowa; Bertha, wife of Rev. Calvin Shmitt, of Garner, Iowa, and Elmer, near Cleves. The three children who preceded their mother in death were Jennie, about one year old; Andrew, 17 years; Flora almost 30 years.
Mrs. Flessner was a real mother in Israel, a loving, devoted helpmate to her husband, and a true mother to her children. A woman of quiet disposition but of deep faith in God. In this she was strong.
She was also a good neighbor and a faithful member of the church. A private funeral was held from the house and the remains taken to the Eastfriesland cemetery, two miles northeast of Cleves and buried in the family lot. Services were conducted by Rev. A. C. Kruse of Steamboat Rock. Beautiful floral offerings bore testimony of sympathy and love expressed by many friends and neighbors. The surviving members of the family feel very grateful for all kindness and assistance received during their sad days of bereavement.
