Grace M. Harken
Funeral services of Grace M. Harken of Iowa City, formerly of Austinville were held Saturday, January 5 at 3 p.m. at the West Friesland Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Harken died January 3 in Iowa City after an extended illness. Officiating were Dr. Jack Zerwas and Pastor Kenneth Remer. Mrs. Laura DeVries was organist. Ushers were Doug Neymeyer and Virgil Janssen. Serving as pallbearers were Michael Harken, Delbert Harken, Raymond I. Harken, Scott Harken, Robert Harken and Cornelius Harken. Interment was in the church cemetery. The Brandt-Fritz Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Harken was born in Beloit, Wisconsin on Nov. 16, 1898, the daughter of Rev. Frederick J. and Barbara Loetscher Waalkes. After graduation from Bookings High School, she attended South Dakota State College and became a newspaper reporter. In 1921, she married John R. Harken of Austinville. To this union were born two children, Mrs. Harold (Jan) Welin, and Ronald, both now living in Boone.
After the death of her husband in 1941 she carried on his business for a number of years. For the past three years she lived in Iowa City with her sister. Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers. She leaves to mourn her, her son, daughter, five grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. O. B. (Marguerite) Limoseth of Iowa City.
