Corneal R. Harken
Corneal R. Harken was born on February 15, 1889 in Butler County, the son of Reemt and Anna Heyenga Harken. He was born and raised on the same farm south of Austinville. On December 1, 1915, he married Edna Oelmann at Parkersburg. They farmed south of Austinville until 1946 when they retired and moved to Ackley.
Corneal Harken confessed his faith in Christ as he and his wife became members of the West Friesland Presbyterian Church, Ackley, in September of 1917, where he was a life-long member. In this church he later served as a Trustee and an Elder.
In August of 1979, Corneal moved to Maple Manor Nursing Home at Aplington. He died at the Home on June 12, 1980 at the age of 91 years, 3 months and 27 days.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna in 1952 and an infant granddaughter. Also by his parents, four brothers, Klaas, Ben, John R. and Isbrandt R., and two sisters, Hattie Roelse and Anna Muller. Mr. Harken is survived by his two children, Richard Harken of Parkersburg and Delbert Harken of Ackley; five grandchildren, Sharlene (Mrs. Erico) Denholm; Derold and James Harken, and Delton and Dennis Harken, and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the West Friesland Presbyterian Church with Rev. Kenneth Remer officiating. Mrs. Lester Neymeyer was organist and Gayle Willms was pianist. Singers were Mrs. Chris Ridder and Mrs. Wayne Neymeyer. Ushers were Gerald Janssen and Lester Miller. Pall bearers were Ronald Harken, Raymond I. Harken, Corneilius J. Harken, Paul Aswegan, Walter Heyenga and Hilton Frerichs. Interment was in the church cemetery.
